High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) technology is one of the pillars of modern diamond science. It replicates the extreme thermodynamic conditions found deep within the Earth's mantle (roughly 140 to 190 kilometers below the surface) to either crystallize carbon into diamond or alter the atomic structure of existing crystals.

1. HPHT Synthesis: Growing Diamond Crystals

During HPHT synthesis, high-purity carbon (often graphite) is placed in a tiny growth cell inside a heavy press. The system is heated to approximately 1400°C to 1600°C and subjected to pressures between 50,000 and 60,000 atmospheres (roughly 5 to 6 GPa). A metal alloy catalyst (containing iron, nickel, or cobalt) melts and dissolves the carbon source, allowing carbon atoms to precipitate onto a diamond seed crystal.

This process transforms brownish stones into D-to-F colorless gems. Additionally, HPHT treatment can turn Type Ia/Ib diamonds into vivid fancy yellows, oranges, or greenish-yellows by reorganizing nitrogen atoms.
