Unlike the HPHT process which mimics high-pressure mantle conditions, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) grows diamonds in a low-pressure vacuum chamber. This gas-phase synthesis method allows for the creation of high-purity single-crystal diamond plates, making it highly versatile for both gemological and industrial applications.
The CVD Synthesis Process
The CVD process is carried out in several key stages:
- Substrate Placement: Small, ultra-flat diamond seed crystals (often produced via HPHT) are laid out on a substrate holder.
- Gas Introduction: Methane (CH4) and Hydrogen (H2) gases are introduced into the chamber, which is depressurized to a fraction of atmospheric pressure.
- Plasma Activation: Microwave energy is introduced to ionize the gases into a glowing plasma plume, reaching temperatures above 2000°C.
- Carbon Deposition: The plasma breaks down methane, creating carbon radicals. These radicals deposit onto the cooler diamond seeds (approx. 800°C to 1000°C), building the diamond structure layer by layer. Hydrogen gas plays a critical role, etching away any non-diamond carbon (graphite) that tries to form.
"Because CVD diamonds grow in flat, parallel layers, they do not exhibit the complex 3D growth sectors of HPHT crystals. Instead, they often exhibit microscopic strain lines visible under polarized light."
Post-Growth Color Tints
CVD diamonds can sometimes develop a brownish tint during growth due to lattice defects or nitrogen impurities. To correct this, manufacturers often subject CVD crystals to a post-growth HPHT annealing treatment. This heat treatment heals the lattice, resulting in colorless stones (D-F color grades). Lab reports will typically note "Post-growth treatment detected" for CVD diamonds that have been annealed.
