Argyle Pink Diamonds After the Mine Closure: A Market Update

Rio Tinto's Argyle mine in Western Australia produced roughly 90% of the world's pink, purplish-pink, and violet diamonds during its 37 years of operation before closing permanently in November 2020. Half a decade on, its absence continues to define pricing and sourcing conversations across the fancy color diamond trade.

Where Supply Stands Now

No replacement source with equivalent volume or intensity has emerged. Remaining global pink diamond supply now comes from smaller, irregular finds in South Africa, Brazil, Russia, and historically Golconda-region deposits in India, none of which approach Argyle's historical output. The result is a market with a fixed, shrinking pool of certified Argyle-origin material and a separately thinning pool of non-Argyle pinks.

The Provenance Premium

Certified Argyle stones, accompanied by both a GIA report and the mine's own Argyle Diamond Investments certificate with its proprietary 1P-9P grading, continue to trade at a premium over comparable non-Argyle pinks. Specialist auction data and wholesale trading figures indicate certified Argyle pinks have appreciated 20-60% since the November 2020 closure, with the highest-intensity grades showing the sharpest gains.

"Every year without new Argyle production makes the existing certified inventory more clearly a finite, closed set. That dynamic is unusual in any asset class and is the core reason institutional buyers keep circling this category."

What This Means for B2B Buyers Today

Sourcing genuine, dual-certified Argyle stock is harder every year, making relationships with established bourse-based dealers more valuable than ever. See our Argyle Pink Diamond guide for the current grading scale and pricing tiers, or submit a wholesale enquiry for available certified stock.
