Natural Fancy Red Diamonds
Natural Fancy Red diamonds are the absolute pinnacle of rarity in the gemological world. They are the ultimate treasure for collectors and investors. The occurrence of a pure red diamond is so geologically extraordinary that only a tiny handful are documented in human history.

Understanding Fancy Red Gems
Geological Origin
Like pink diamonds, the crimson hue of red diamonds is not caused by chemical impurities but by 'plastic deformation' of the crystal lattice. Extreme heat and pressure deep within the Earth displaced carbon atoms, creating atomic glide planes that selectively absorb green light and reflect deep red. In red diamonds, the concentration and orientation of these structural defects are uniquely dense, resulting in a deep, body-colored red.
Hue & Secondary Overtones
Unlike other fancy colors, GIA does not grade pure red diamonds on an intensity scale (there is no 'Fancy Light Red' or 'Fancy Vivid Red'—they are simply certified as 'Fancy Red'). However, red diamonds frequently appear with secondary modifiers such as purplish, orangey, or brownish overtones. A Fancy Purplish Red or Fancy Orangey Red is highly sought after, while a pure unmodified Fancy Red is the rarest gem in the world.
Market & Valuation
Due to their extreme scarcity, there is no standardized wholesale market for red diamonds. Almost every purchase is handled via private negotiations or high-end auction houses. With the closure of the Argyle mine in 2020, which was the source of the vast majority of the world's red diamonds, the supply has effectively ground to a halt, driving collector demand to unprecedented heights.
Fancy Color Intensity Scale
GIA grades fancy color diamonds across nine intensity levels from Faint to Fancy Dark. The grade profoundly affects value; a one-step upgrade in intensity can double or triple the per-carat price for rare colors.

Red Diamonds as a Hard Asset
Red diamonds represent the highest value concentration of any hard asset on the planet, with prices for high-quality specimens easily exceeding $1,000,000 per carat. They are historically insulated from economic downturns and represent the ultimate hedge for sovereign wealth, ultra-high-net-worth portfolios, and elite collectors who view them as museum-quality investments.

Red Diamond FAQ
How much does a red diamond cost per carat?
Fancy Red diamonds are the most expensive diamonds in the world. Prices start around $100,000 to $300,000 per carat for brownish or orangey modifiers, and easily reach $1,000,000 to over $3,000,000 per carat for pure, unmodified Fancy Red stones. Prices are highly customized and determined on a stone-by-stone basis.
Why are red diamonds graded only as 'Fancy Red'?
GIA does not apply intensity modifiers (like Faint, Light, Intense, or Vivid) to pure red diamonds. Because the color red itself is the highest expression of lattice deformation saturation, any diamond that achieves a true red body color is simply graded as 'Fancy Red'. However, if a secondary color modifier is present, they can be graded as 'Fancy Purplish Red', 'Fancy Orangey Red', etc.
What is the most famous red diamond?
The most famous is the Moussaieff Red (formerly the Red Shield), a 5.11-carat triangular brilliant cut (trilliant) diamond graded Fancy Red by the GIA. It was found in Brazil in the 1990s and is the largest known pure red diamond in the world.
