The Graff Pink: Sixty Years Unnamed, Then a World Record

In November 2010, a 24.78-carat Fancy Intense Pink diamond sold at Sotheby's Geneva for approximately US$46 million. Sotheby's records the stone and result in its history of Graff milestones. The buyer, Laurence Graff, named it the Graff Pink.

An Unnamed Diamond for Sixty Years

The diamond had previously been sold by Harry Winston into private ownership and later returned to public attention at the 2010 auction. At the time of the sale it was described as Fancy Intense Pink and Type IIa. Type IIa is a scientific diamond-type classification related to detectable nitrogen, separate from color and clarity grading.

The 2010 Sale That Made Headlines

The sale set a world record at the time. Graff later repolished the diamond; reports about its later weight and grade describe a changed stone, so buyers should distinguish the 2010 auction specifications from subsequent specifications.

A Reference Point for Pink Diamond Buyers

The Graff Pink is a documented historical result for one named stone. It should not be used as a direct price comparable for a different pink diamond without accounting for the full color description, weight, measurements, clarity, cut, condition, provenance, and sale context.
